Privacy Policy

Spirit Sense ("we", "our", "the app") helps you identify and learn about spirits through photo scanning and search. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and what control you have over it.

The short version: We collect your email for sign-in, send bottle photos to Google Gemini for identification (photos are not stored), and track basic usage counts. We don't sell your data. You can delete your account anytime from Settings.

1. What We Collect

Account information

Email address and display name from Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In. Used to create and manage your account.
Profile photo URL (if provided by your sign-in provider). Displayed in-app only.

Usage data

Number of photo scans and profile lookups per day. Used for rate limiting and to enforce free-tier limits.
Spirits saved to your personal collection (names, types, brands).

Camera photos

When you scan a bottle, the photo is sent to Google's Gemini API for identification.
We do not store your photos. They are processed in real-time and discarded after the API returns a result.

Contacts
Device identifiers for advertising
Browsing history

2. How We Use Your Data

Authentication: Your email identifies your account and syncs your data across devices.
Rate limiting: Usage counts ensure fair access for all users.
Spirit identification: Photos are sent to Google Gemini solely for bottle identification.
Collection: Saved spirits are stored so you can access your collection anytime.

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or selling to third parties.

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following services to operate the app:

Supabase — Database, authentication, and server functions. Your account data and usage records are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. Supabase Privacy Policy
Google Gemini — AI model used for photo identification and spirit profile generation. Photos and text prompts are sent to Google's API. Google AI Terms
RevenueCat — Subscription management. Processes your subscription status (not payment details — those are handled by Apple/Google). RevenueCat Privacy Policy
Google Sign-In / Apple Sign-In — Authentication providers. We receive your email and display name; we never see your password.

4. AI-Generated Content

Spirit profiles, tasting notes, production details, food pairings, and cocktail suggestions are generated by AI. While we strive for accuracy, this content may contain inaccuracies or errors. It is provided for entertainment and educational purposes and should not be treated as professional or expert advice.

5. Data Retention

Account data (email, display name, collection): Retained until you delete your account.
Usage data (daily scan/search counts): Retained for 90 days, then automatically purged.
Photos: Not retained. Processed in real-time and immediately discarded.
Cached spirit profiles: AI-generated profiles are cached in our database to improve speed. These are not tied to individual users.

6. Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Regardless of where you live, you have the right to:

Access your data: Contact us and we will provide a copy of all data associated with your account.
Delete your account: Go to Settings in the app and tap "Delete Account." Alternatively, visit our account deletion page or email us directly. This permanently removes your account, collection, and all usage data from our systems.
Opt out of data sale: We do not sell your personal data to anyone. There is nothing to opt out of.
Data portability: Request a machine-readable export of your data by contacting us.

For EU/EEA users: Our legal basis for processing is consent (you signed up) and legitimate interest (operating the service). You may withdraw consent by deleting your account.

For California users: Under the CCPA, you have the right to know what data we collect (listed above), to delete it, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

7. Age Restriction

Spirit Sense is intended for users aged 17 and older. The app provides information about alcoholic beverages and is rated accordingly on app stores. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If we learn we have collected data from a minor, we will delete it promptly.

8. Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), row-level security on our database, and secure authentication via Google and Apple. No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The "Effective date" at the top always reflects the latest version.
